Rural WiFi

I have rural property with no out buildings but with electricity.  There is a cell tower about a mile away with excellent Verizon service.  What can i use to connect an outdoor wi fi nest camera?

  • Any good wi-fi hotspot that operates on Verizon network (along with a Verizon wi-fi data plan) should connect you.  I have a very remote mountain cabin that has line-of-sight to an AT&T 4G tower in a valley about 4 miles away.  We use mobile hotspot to get internet and it is excellent and fast enough for basic needs (5-7 mbps).  Now I want to install camera and thermostat I can contol remotely from main home 4 hrs away.  Biggest issue is with making sure it keeps running/comes back on after power faiilures which are common there. Verizon Jetpack hotspot claims 24 hr battery life, but if you have power faiilure and battery runs out before power is restored I believe you will have to manually restart it on site. If you're power is pretty reliablle (or your property is not too far away) you may not have this concern. A caveat, I know nothing about the data needs of Nest cameras, you'd have to check that out and be sure that your Verizon data plan would cover what you need. Since it sounds like you don't have structure on property you would also need to be sure the mobile hotspot is protected from elements.
