Hi, as far as I know the difference between v2 and v3 is the web-interface for configuration. But how can I tell if a switch is v2 or v3? I may buy a used one and need to tell the non-tech-savvy s...

This is correct.
A photo of the physical device, especially the labels of the device (backside, and/or the original color box with the labels attached) could give some insight.
Alternate, run the Warranty Check and input the device serial number.
Similar, I would imagine the Netgear Switch Discovery Tool run on the network with the switch connected, would show the version, too.
