gs116ev2 setup question
i bought this switch managed switch by accident, and want to know if it can be run as a unmanaged switch?

No accident at all, the ability to configure or look into the device can become handy at some point.
The default configuration is VLAN 1 with all ports untagged and the PIVD set to 1. There is nothing that stops you from using it right away like yet another unmanaged switch.
It's suggested to update the switch to a current firmware and change the default password as soon as possible. The NETGEAR Switch Discovery Tool (NSDT) available for MacOS, Windows, and Linux might come handy to find the switch IP address. Permitting it's in the same subnet as your other systems (as it has received an IP config from your router DHCP server) you can open a Web browser direct to the switch IP address.
