Problem with network speed to NAS
Dear Community, About two years ago, I purchased two Netgear Orbi devices to complete my home network setup, replacing a physical LAN connection between my workstation and my NAS. Despite contact...

Hi CrimpOn,
Thank you for your response. You’re absolutely right—I just wanted to point out that there shouldn’t be any issue with the speeds supported by the devices involved in the process.
I’m using two of the mentioned Orbi units. The router is connected directly to the NAS (DS220+), while the satellite is “wired” to my workstation.
I’ll definitely try testing with iPerf. So far, I’ve been testing simply by transferring files. Here’s what I’ve observed:
•When I connect my laptop via a wired connection to the satellite (the Orbi that my workstation is connected to), speeds are around 30 Mbit/s.
•However, when I plug the laptop directly into the router (which then acts as a switch, with a physical LAN connection to the NAS), I get speeds just above 220 Mbit/s, which matches the speed of the NAS hard drives.
Additionally, running a regular internet speed test on my workstation shows much higher speeds are achievable (over 300 Mbit/s download). This makes me suspect a software issue might be causing the problem, especially considering that the two Orbi units are only 10 meters apart with a clear line of sight.
Best regards,
Alex

Agree entirely. If an internet Speed Test when connected to the satellite produces over 300Mbps, then a connection to the NAS over the same WiFi router-satellite link should produce the full 220Mbps that the NAS is capable of.
A crazy question.......
Is there any chance that the data flow when connected to the satellite is going through the internet rather than directly to the NAS?
- What is the upload speed on your ISP connection?
(If it is close to 30Mbps, that would be quite a coincidence) - How do you specify that the laptop should save data to the NAS?
(by the IP address on the LAN?)
(using a Synology networking feature?)

Hi again,
That sounds possible. My internet upload speed is around 20 Mbit/s (I’ll try unplugging my modem to see if that changes anything).
The laptop was connected to the NAS in exactly the same way as my workstation is — using a local connection in the explorer/finder.
Best regards,
Alex

Well, darn. If the maximum upload speed is 20Mbps then the communication is not going "through the cloud" somehow and back. It was a crazy thought.
It's got to be something else.
