SXR80 only works with direct connection to modem?

Its more a function of your isp only allows 1 device to be connected to the modem to be assigned an ip address. The switch shouldn't be getting assigned that IP address but maybe it is. And because the switch doesn't have dhcp capability, it isn't assigning an address to the orbi.
In cases where you're doing modem only device---router then they need to be direct connected.
Why are you wanting the switch in there?
If you truly need it, you could leave the modem in router mode, add the switch, then connect the orbi in access point mode.

As a follow-up, I should have also noted that I've tried the ethernet out from the switch into the WAN port and all LAN ports on the Orbi Pro with no success
