Armor and Privacy
Has NETGEAR/Bitdefender published a clear and unambiguous statement indicating that the Armor service does not collect and retain user’s information passing through a router (except, perhaps, on the router itself for local on-device processing)? Consider, for example, that the URL Blacklist function in Armor transmits and checks “any outbound connection… against the Bitdefender cloud."
Neither the NETGEAR privacy policy nor the Bitdefender privacy policy appear to contain such a statement, although recent comments from a NETGEAR spokesperson and the Bitdefender Code of Business Conduct are encouraging.
P.S.: It is not my intentention to suggest that NETGEAR/Bitdefender is acting inappropriately. I am simply seeking reassurance that the privacy and anonymity of a user of Armor is fully respected.
Based on a conversation with a Bitdefender Customer Care Representative, it appears that the company does not retain information about websites which are viewed by a user of NETGEAR Armor.
Additionally, the Bitdefender Subscription Agreement and Terms of Services describes their Data Collection Technology as scanning “traffic in an impersonal mode to detect the malware,” and notes that uploaded data “does not identify You or include any information that can be used to identify any individual person” (italics added).
