Netgear Armor - Do I need it in order for the router to be secure?

I purchased a Nighthawk AX4300 RAX45 Router from Costco the other day for home use. 

Do I need to activate Netgear Armor for this router to act as a firewall?  Is this RAX45 router reasonably secure without having to pay for the extra Netgear Armor subscription?  

Also, I can't even seem to activate the Netgear Armor trial without getting an error message. So, that is a bit frustrating.

This router may be going straight back to Costco.
