I understand that Netgear is tryng to push users to use the paid version of Circle parental control and I am trying to understand if I can make OpenDNS working or not.
(Caveat: I have not implemented any sort of Parental Controls myself.)
I would ignore any (all?) links that Netgear has conveniently placed in the Orbi web and "app" controls and go directly to OpenDNS:
https://www.opendns.com/home-internet-security/
Notice that there are two "Free" and two Paid options for home internet security:
- OpenDNS Family Shield is "automatic". Simply tell the Orbi router "Use these DNS servers" and insert the IP addresses given in the signup instructions.(208.67.222.222 and 208.67.229.220)
- OpenDNS Home (also "Free") requires signing up for an account.
There is no dollar cost to "giving it a try".
You may find that enterprising teenagers are capable of bypassing OpenDNS by manually setting DNS on their individual devices. In that case, using the Netgear router to intercept all DNS requests and route them to OpenDNS may be the only solution.
Sorry not to be of much help.
