Changing channels on a D6000 without Genie?

I'm a newcomer to Netgear, and I'm having a few problems! I've recently moved to a new home with a lousy internet connection. I bought my Netgear D6000 in the hope that it might improve things, and it has to a degree, the internet is no longer dropping out every 10 minutes! But the speed is terrible, with upload and download speeds of 28~33 Kbps according to speednet. I wanted to try changing the channel on my modem/router, but I find that Netgear Genie is not compatible with Windows 10. I've tried downloading an older version of Genie, but after 3 hours of downloading just 27 MB, the download has failed several times. Can somebody please give me a step by step guide on changing channels without using Netgear Genie? I hesitate to talk with my ISP, Telstra here in Australia, as they will almost certainly say they cannot help me because I'm using a Netgear modem rather than their useless Thompson units.
