Enable and Disable Parental Controls Netgear Genie WNDR3400v3

I have already reviewed the following related thread:

https://community.netgear.com/t5/Genie/Is-there-a-password-to-change-parental-controls-in-Netgenie/m-p/1258772#M5146

It does not provide a solution, rather a confirmation that it is an issue. I think this should be more of a priority for netgear to patch in a software update.

THE ISSUE:

After setting Parental Controls with Netgear Genie, applying all settings through the OpenDNS login and getting everything working... ANY user on the computer simply can open Netgear Genie and click Parental Controls and Disable Live Parental Controls. There is NO PROMPT for password for this function.

  • If you click on Router Settings, there is a prompt for password.
  • If you click on Change Custom Settings in the Parental Controls, there is a password prompt for OpenDNS within your browser.

Again, ANYONE can simply open the application Netgear Genie, click Parental Controls on the left, and click Disable.

My 9 & 12 year olds will not be fooled by this silly attempt at nanny software. And before I get blasted about keeping an eye on them, I DO, but this software has an intended purpose, and it currently has a MAJOR SECURITY LOOPHOLE.

Thanks for reading.

  • One idea what if you placed Genie under administrator account  on the computer for at lease Windows would need a password to access the program I'am not sure how this would work in the real world since Genie controls the router when you use it possible work around.
