My R6120 router keeps kicking off

I'm having recurring issues with my R6120 wireless router. The internet disconnects once an hour for five or so minutes a time. It is brand new. Any help appreciated. My internet company told me to change the 2.4GHZ channel to 11 instead of Auto. Why would this fix it? It didn't fix it anyways.
