Hi gensym,
As it stands, that is the current workaround for the issue since engineering focus has shifted to mobile apps and there has not been any update for the desktop apps.
Are you referring to third party firmware support? If yes, NETGEAR does not have an official list of third party firmware that the devices support and loading such firmware voids the device warranty.

- gensymAug 09, 2017TutorHello Dexter,
I would like to acknowledge your trouble; and your statement has been very interesting and useful!
1) re: Desktop Genie: many thanks for the candid words: it is helpful to know what one is actually up against.
2) re: third party firmware: I also appreciate the explicit heads-up regarding giving third party software a shot (vs. e.g. *): it will help me keep my focus on the core things that do work really well (and exactly therefore are all too easily overlooked), extending the very good experience with NETGEAR equipment from the times of 802.11g .
All the best!
