Port Forwarding 443

I would like to port forward the traffic coming in on port 443 but it appears port 443 is being used by the Genie software.

Is it possible to move the Genie software to another port to free up 443? I can cope with entering a port number when I want to access the Modem configuration!

Thanks in advance.

    Hi so1,

    1. What is the model number of the NETGEAR device?

    2. What is the firmware version?

    3. Have you tried forwarding port 443? If yes, were you getting an error message?

  • No, the Genie app does not allow you to change the port it uses to communicate with the router.  The Genie app is nothing more than a browser-based interface that communicates with the router admin page using https that uses port 443.  To change the Genie app would also require the router's internal web server to use a different port for https which also cannot be configured.  443 is the standard.

However, I am not sure why you have a problem.  The Genie app is accessing the router's web service over your LAN on port 443.  Port forwarding is a process of redirecting an incoming packet on the WAN from an external port to a different port on the LAN.   Thus you could still redirect 443 without impacting Genie on the LAN.  However, if you do this, you may end up breaking all secure (https) web browsing on your network.  I assume you know what you are doing.
