If you give #2 a try, all that should be needed is to maybe power off both the new router and the MK system. Connect the MR to the new verizon router, power On the new router and the MK system. The MK system will retain what you have already been using. Disable the new routers wifi radios is all and use the DMZ on the new router for the MR.
