I don't have a MK system so can't attest to its speeds/performance personally. I haven't seen a whole lot of testing on it but one tester (https://dongknows.com/netgear-nighthawk-mk63-review/) hit much faster speeds than what you're seeing.
What modem do you have?
What firmware is on the router?
How are you speedtesting? (device, site, etc)

Thanks the article was helpful. The modem is an ATT BGW210-700, I have the latest firmware v1.0.6.110,

that att device has its own integrated router. it can cause a double nat.

options? (only use 1)
1. put the att device in passthrough/modem only mode. Att hasn't made it easy with this route.

2. Put the netgears IP address into the att's dmz.
3. put the netgear into access point mode. this leaves the att device controlling routing. wifi/ethernet all still work, you just loose some features. https://kb.netgear.com/26765/Which-features-are-disabled-on-my-NETGEAR-router-when-it-is-set-to-AP-Mode
