adding additional wireless router to XR500
Last year I purchased an XR500 wirless router to replace my old wireless router. Is it possible to use the old router as a range extender using a wired port to the wired input on the old router?

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Documentation. Get the User Manual (at least). Read. Look for
"access point" or "ap mode". Prepare for disappointment.
As I read its User Manual, unless the feature was added in some later
firmware version, the WNDR4000 is too old/lame to offer an explicit
WAP-mode option. For an ad hoc scheme to deal with such models, see,
for example:

That's written for a Netgear C6300-as-WAP, but the steps are about the
same for any other router (any make/model) which lacks a one-step WAP
option. If the router which you're reconfiguring has a WAN/Internet
Ethernet port (unlike a Cxxxx), then leave it unconnected.
