Cant change 3rd octet

I'm trying to set my ending IP to 10.0.255.254 but its not allowing me to make any changes to the 3rd octet. I have set the appropriate subnet mask but when I go to edit the 3rd octet it just stays a...

Not going to discuss or dispute 10.0.255.254 is a valid host IP address or not: Try 10.0.254.254 instead for example.
