A modem will just pass all the traffic to the router so it will absolutely work with the XR500. It's hard to say whether your loss in speed is just down to the ISP or the modem, that may be something to get in contact with the ISP about. A router cannot increase your speeds that's down to the ISP. The XR500 will help you lower your ping by eliminating local congestion and allowing you to choose the closest servers to you which will improve your online gaming experience.
