I changed the bridge control Settings in the router and it has worked a treat.
All up and running now.
Do you know if you require anything such as PPPoE, VLAN, DHCP identifiers etc for a connection? If not you may need to ask the ISP about this. Are you connecting direct to the NBN Box or do you have a modem/router provided by them as well?

The guy at Harvey Norman said that the X500 could just plug straight in.
My ISP provides a username and password which I have entered.
I did a reboot of everything again and tried to re run the setup wizard on the router but it says that I have no internet connection

- Go through the setup wizard, skip everything if needed as you won't get a connection until you finish that anyway. Then in Settings > Internet Setup choose no login, then apply, see if you get a connection. If not, select login and enter the details you were given, apply, see if you get a connection.
- Done both. Neither provides a connection.
- Do you have another router you could put between the box and the XR to see if you get a connection that way? What is your ISP?
