Nighthawk XR1000 SLOW....SLOW...SLOW...!!!!!!!
Hello World, I decided upgrade my old router, so i thought with the new Nighthawk XR1000. My old router is a Netgear Nighthawk X4S. Believe it or not, this new router is performing much slower th...

Not at the moment. I use mostly default setting on my XR. Manual channel 1 and 40. This depends on any wifi neighbors you may have around you. 1,6, and 11 are primary channels to manually use on 2.4Ghz. 36 thru 48 and 149 to 161 on 5Ghz.
I have Smart Connect enabled. I believe MIMO is as well. Been running well since I put the XR online: 10/5
I also keep a laptop fan cooler under the router as well. Keeps it cool.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend enabling all the additional features for wireless, that could hinder you. Smart Connect off would probably be best to connect to 5GHz manually for speeds.
You mentioned in your first post that you have a firewall controlling filtering and QoS:
1) Is this on the upstream modem/router and how have you configured this?
2) Do you still have devices connected to that modem/router?
3) What are you hoping to use the router for exactly if you're not using/interested in the main features? Depending on your answer AP mode might be right for you.

After enabling Smart connect and the other 2 wireless settings above it. I rebooted the router and I'm now getting about 700mb down and 838mb up. I'm satisfied with this. I do not care to use any of the main features because this router will end up being behind the firewall. This router will be used primarily as a guest network sort of. So those extra features really don't matter on this network.
However, I'm interested in your commentary regarding Smart Connect. Enabling it provides me with better speeds. When I was connected to only the 5g signal my speeds were terrible.
Thanks for all responses.

Only reason I ask is because I'm surprised you decided on the XR router which is heavily focused on features especially some that are unique and primarily for gaming.
Given you don't want to use them, AP mode would be best then as that will disable DumaOS and may boost the speed a little. Smart Connect just makes 2.4/5GHz into one network and the router then decides when a device should use 2.4 or 5GHz based on its bandwidth usage but if that's working best for you that's great!- bobbydigital00Oct 18, 2022Apprentice
I really wanted a more powerful router than the one I was currently using. However, that doesn't seem to really be the case as I continue to test.
Another question I have is combining this new router with an Extender. I've read on a few forums that Smart Connect didn't work well when connected with an extender. Anyone have any experience with this router configuration and an extender?
Also, the only reason why I went with the gaming routers is because all the other lower end routers without all the advance features performed really poorly. If you know of a good router without all the bells and whistles please share.
Thanks for all responses.

I personally don't have any experience using extenders with the XR1000, but we haven't heard many reports of issues with using these on the Nighthawk Pro Gaming range in general so it's not a common issue we're aware of.
It depends on the exact bells and whistles you're after, the XR1000 is the top of the NPG range so that will be the most feature rich, though in terms of actual networking features I don't think there's much difference between the other options in the range.
