XR1000 Packet Loss while gaming
Hello, I recently bought this router so I could connect to lower ping servers from my area, Ohio. My current internet speeds are 400 mbps Down and 20 mbps Up. I'm still learning all of the QoS funct...
- Jun 15, 2021Okay that's good, the router doesn't appear to be reporting any packet loss so it could be the server itself. When you notice the packet loss, try forcing a different server with the Geo-Filter and see if it disappears.

It is 0 for both.

That is a wonderful idea. I do have a question about QoS. If I have 5 devices and 2 of them play call of duty. How does the DumaOS classified prioritize packets to both devices without making eachother lag or slow eachother down? Also, if I have 5 devices and 2 needs the bandwidth, would it be better to use the flower or leave it at default with the "share excess bandwidth". I'll mark that as the solution as thats what makes sense after explaining the 0 unprioritized.
- Netduma-FraserJun 15, 2021NetDuma PartnerSo the bandwidth used by gaming is very little so they won't cause each other problems and both can be put ahead of the network queue to avoid the other devices streaming etc from causing problems. I usually suggest leaving Bandwidth Allocation at the default as allocating bandwidth in this case wouldn't necessarily alleviate any lag. Great to hear that!

Hey Team, I hate to revive a solved thread. So I am using Ping Plotter and notice when I am using the router, every so often I get packet loss still. When I plug into modem directly, ping plotter picks up no issues. When I used the router, at first i was experiencing PL every 10 mins. It still happens but not at every 10 mins. When I do get PL, my router connection status all reset to 0 except lease time. When I play call of duty, i see a red bar on 2nd hop and carries all the way down to destination which in my case was pingplotter.com but i find this to be strange because I'm not getting PL when im directly into modem. My WAN time resets and my logs say "Internet connected" with a time sync after. Could this be a firmware issue with netgear?

Update: My router is now reporting 8 to 20% PL and stops there on ping plotter. Honestly, I'm sort of confused on what steps to take to help figure out the issue cause once I think its one thing, its the other and it goes back and forth lol.
- Netduma-FraserJun 26, 2021NetDuma PartnerCould you provide a screenshot of the PingPlotter results showing you have packet loss please? Show the whole application, including the bottom graph as that's most important.

Yes I will do that. I'm playing now so when it comes up I'll post it.

The pictures didnt show up. Let me see if I can fix it.

Okay, you will see most of it is coming from router. Sometimes, I'll have 0 at the router and it'll start at hop 2 and carry down. Note: with COD servers, they wont allow you to ping their servers so it will always say 100% loss.

Here is an example of when my router reports zero and travels down the line from ISP.
- Netduma-FraserJun 27, 2021NetDuma PartnerThe packet loss shown on the hops don't matter, it's the packet loss shown on the bottom graph that is the mean thing but as you can't ping game servers effectively it's not as useful. Can you run a plot to a local news website or Google (8.8.8.8) and then provide a screenshot of those results please?
- InoculateJun 28, 2021GuideYes, I have Monday off work so I will definitely do this. I may need to start a new thread for this but is XR1000 still having issues with Open NAT with multiple devices because it's definitely affecting me.
- Netduma-FraserJun 28, 2021NetDuma PartnerLet's get this one sorted, then we can move on to that, if it's what I think then I can potentially provide something for that.

Here is 3 photos. These are the spikes I am getting and sometimes it gets bad enough to actually reset my WAN connection and boot everyone offline. This happens with both current firmware and trial. I am the only one on internet and this PC is also the only device connected currently.
- Netduma-FraserJun 28, 2021NetDuma PartnerThe spikes are pretty minimal really, only going up to around 30ms which wouldn't be too perceptible. There is a little packet loss but it does recover. Can you try a local site as well and also when you're connected direct to the modem please?
- InoculateJun 28, 2021GuideYes, most of the time thankfully it's minimal and does recover. At times, it does get severe and the other night I was playing and i got totally disconnected from the game and discord servers. I will plug directly into modem again and monitor it. I've never had an issue with only modem. How long would you like me to monitor the modem connection? Would you like screenshots every hour for maybe 2 or 3 hours or PL, whichever occurs first? I can do the same for the router as well so I can get stable, consistent results for the team.
- Netduma-FraserJun 28, 2021NetDuma PartnerYeah that would be good, really what I want to determine is whether you get this packet loss when direct to the modem as well - if you do then that would indicate and issue with the line/modem itself and the router can be ruled out

Here are a few sites, Fox 8 being a local news station. Played for about an hour and a half, 2 hours. This is with Modem direct. Would you like me to do same test with router?

Here is Fox and Twitter with the router plugged in, Ethernet connection. I have notcied the lag spikes are actually not as bad with this trial firmware however, I do occasionally hit a bad section still and I will lose all connection and it reconnects itself eventually which is where I experience server disconnects because I "time out".

The most recent 2 red lines you see caused me to disconnect from discord and freeze in Call of duty but reconnected in like...5 ish seconds.
