XR1000 ping spikes, poor connection and bufferbloat
I bought an XR1000 and I got a modem from my ISP rather than a router as it should logically be better.(?) My house has Fiber-Optic wired to the house but the modem is connected with a coax cable an...

In that case I must've done it right, I selected google and I saw it ran through some close servers namely Zürich and something from my ISP.

Try a local site in your country as the routing is probably better
- peakitfDec 13, 2022ApprenticeI did that to the ISP ip you see there too, same 1000 ping spikes.
- Netduma-FraserDec 13, 2022NetDuma PartnerOkay so that's something you'll need to take up with the ISP then unfortunately, its not something a router can fix inherently. Collect evidence using PingPlotter and then you can send that to them to investigate.
- peakitfDec 14, 2022ApprenticeI've been getting mad packetloss and high ping, I'm getting a technician sent out to fix it.
- Netduma-FraserDec 14, 2022NetDuma PartnerI would highly recommend you remove the router from your setup when they come to test so they do it purely from the modem, otherwise there may be an inclination to blame the router
- peakitfDec 14, 2022ApprenticeDon't worry, I'll be conducting some more tests on the modem itself with 3 different cables. I also re-set my NIC settings just to be safe. I'll also test another PC just incase. Technician is scheduled for friday afternoon.
- peakitfDec 15, 2022ApprenticeNetduma-Fraser FURRYe38 I'm getting a technician Wednesday morning, tomorrow I'll go and trade my modem for a router again and set aside the XR1000 for now in preperation for the technician. My ISP has a relatively limited selection of routers and modems, most of them being on lists of routers/modems with bad hardware... Any knowledge you guys could share with me when I do engage in discussions with my ISP? I'm not sure what kind of claims I could make, nor do I really know what to explain to them when it comes to the connection other than the blatant 2000 ping and constant packetloss/disconnections, I'm hoping that there's a way I could get my own choice of modem/router, perhaps a list I could share that might have some decent hardware from my ISP if they absolutely insist? My connection has never been this bad before I tried to fix my bufferbloat, but prior to that I've also never really been in sync with online play, do you guys reckon that the solution is to aim for this router setup to work and ultimately eliminate bufferbloat? My assumption at the minute is lower ping and no bufferbloat could positively manipulate online play a bit.
- Netduma-LiamDec 16, 2022NetDuma PartnerI would ask if you can get a list of some options to choose from, if they make a specific suggestion I'd ask if you can have a moment to research it and make sure it's not on any of those lists you mention. You can always send a list over to us too and we can double check there's nothing in there that could be a bad choice. Once you've resolved the issue of ping spikes from the ISP, the last thing to make sure of is that any congestion caused by internal traffic is dealt with properly. We can do this with QoS. Once that's done, everything should be good.
- peakitfDec 16, 2022ApprenticeWill do, at the minute I have to deal with the spikes for now. I just connected and reset my router however and it asks me for fixed ip and dns from my ISP, but my ISP says they have nothing of the sort, what do I do here to avoid bugs? ISP also recommends I keep using my XR1000
- Netduma-FraserDec 16, 2022NetDuma PartnerYou don't need to input that, you can leave it as the default and it will grab the necessary information from the modem
- peakitfDec 16, 2022ApprenticeWhile I'm sitting here with my connection that buffers videos every 5 seconds, is there any chance that the XR1000's auto setup could've grabbed some not so ideal IP's like the DNS? I'm not sure what these IP's should look like.
- Netduma-FraserDec 16, 2022NetDuma PartnerNo that won't be the case, most likely local congestion, are you using QoS and are ALL devices connected to the XR?
- peakitfDec 16, 2022ApprenticeAt the moment just an Alexa, my PC and my phone. Congestion control didn't have an effect which is why I was concerned of issues since from what I've seen, congestion control should nuke bufferbloat. What does this pingplotter result tell us?
- Netduma-FraserDec 16, 2022NetDuma PartnerI can't see the picture until it has been moderated, can you attach it directly? All devices should be connected to the router otherwise it can't properly control the network and won't be as effective.
- peakitfDec 16, 2022ApprenticeWell that's all the devices I really have, I don't have other internet users in the house, just me. I've attached the image instead, for some reason my router's IP says it's getting packet loss.
- Netduma-FraserDec 16, 2022NetDuma PartnerYou can ignore the first hop, that does show packet loss sometimes but isn't usually a cause for concern. You do have some packet loss on your line though, try again but use a more local website, such as a news site and see what you get.
- peakitfDec 16, 2022ApprenticeThe biggest concern is the 1000-2500 ping that I get every now and then, they're complete disconnects in online games and it was difficult to test, but directly connected to the modem showed the same thing. Prior to testing it myself, my ISP's technician asked me to adjust the coax cable itself, not the connections which showed he identified as a successful solution. With that being said I'm assuming there's really no way to get a somewhat stable connection without fixing that dodgy cable?
- Netduma-FraserDec 16, 2022NetDuma PartnerHow did they recommend you adjust it? It's just screwed in so not much you can do in that regard, if it is faulty you can pickup a new one online or in a store. Try that, if it continues then it's something on their side that they will need to look into.
- peakitfDec 16, 2022ApprenticeThat's what the technician will test and I bet ultimately replace it. I just worry that if I resolve the disconnection issue I might still be stuck with 23 ping to the waveform bufferbloat test when my neighbour has 12 on the most careless setup the world has ever seen, meanwhile I'm trying every trick known to man to lower it in some way. While I've had the XR1000 I haven't been able to reduce bufferbloat at all, does that in any way have anything to do with the broken cable or a whole other issue? I'm also looking to invest in a Cat 8 S/STP cable, I have Cat 8 S/FTP at the moment.
- Netduma-FraserDec 16, 2022NetDuma PartnerOnce you get that sorted you can use PingPlotter while saturating the connection with downloads and then experiment with the Congestion Control percentages to see what lowers the graph as much as possible. It will be a better test as it will use real world traffic and more represent what you'll be doing using the internet.
- peakitfDec 16, 2022ApprenticeI'll report back when the technician has been here, I appreciate everything so far!
- peakitfDec 21, 2022ApprenticeOkay, 2500 ping is gone now and internet is stable apart from 15-16 ping to Waveform's bufferbloat test with ping spikes up to 70 on rare occasions. I'm trying to use the congestion control sliders to lower it by 10% everytime. My results could be great, but I'm always spiking a lot. My minimum ping looks great.
- Netduma-FraserDec 22, 2022NetDuma PartnerThat's brilliant to hear, your base ping is spiking or when it's under load?
- peakitfDec 22, 2022ApprenticeI only see my ping spike in the Waveform Bufferbloat test, a calm undisturbed ping test to my ISP's server Lampert.at shows a ping of 6-8, their server is in Rankweil and I'm in Bludenz in Vorarlberg, same state. It's my ping spikes that increase my bufferbloat and I'm not sure what's normal and what's not. My mate just changed his Router to a newer model from the ISP and he said that he's getting lag spikes that made him quit playing for now and he's now also trying to fix his issues, he's routerless and uses an ISP router unlike me. My concern is the ping spikes in Waveform's bufferbloat test, not sure if it's normal but they asked for a ping plotter test to their server. Should that test be undisturbed or while under load i.e playing? I want to find an issue because I'm still being peeked with lightning speed in Counter Strike which isn't normal, I barely have time to react.
- Netduma-FraserDec 22, 2022NetDuma PartnerI imagine they want a standard ping test, play around with QoS now and see if you can get the spikes under control
- peakitfDec 22, 2022ApprenticeThe spikes are only present in Waveform's Bufferbloat test, else I can't recreate them, tried pinging their site while playing a game but it doesn't do much, at best it bumps up to 13 ping at times. But is there reason to be worried about the ping spikes in that case? Everyone I know with a router like this brings bufferbloat away and reduce ping easily and almost instantly, I've been struggling with it since I got it, could it really be the modem? My mate's net also turned to poo when he switched his router. My ping spikes immensely when the download speed is active during the bufferbloat test, as far as I know that's the only thing I can try to change if I'd like a good connection, things online just move way too fast and weird in comparison to everyone elses and how it used to be.
