XR300 firmware shows wrong version number in system information.
So I had recently manually installed the most current listed firmware for the XR300, version 1.0.3.68_10.3.50. Checking the version number listed in system information shows version 1.0.3.66_10.3.48....

Netgear has set up a community forum specifically for the NightHawk Gaming Router products. Most of the people who watch that forum are more likely to have experience with NH gaming router products and know how to work it better than those of us who follow this router forum. Might be more likely to find someone who has a solution if the question is posted there:

Be sure to clear out all browser caches before and after updating FW.
Use a different browser, MS Edge or Firefox.
Factory reset the router after the router is back to ready from processing the FW update file. Setup from scratch.
