XR500 severe packetloss with Discord
I got the XR500 today and I'm having the most absurd issue ever with Discord, with my previous router it did not happen The computer is connected with ethernet to the router When I run the Discord ...

Netduma-Fraser first of all I want to say that I appreciate you helping me on Sunday to solve this issue
I tried these options and it did not help.
However I kept trying to experiment with QoS and I think I made an advacement
I turned QoS and traffic optimization on, I disabled traffic optimization for all devices and then turned it on specifically for my desktop, packet loss went from ~60% to sub 10%
It did not help with my windows remote desktop picture freezes, I even set the laptop[that appeared twice in the traffic optimization tab, I assume one for ethernet and one for wifi] but it did not help, it still occasionally gets picture freeze

You're very welcome, it might be that you're actually experiencing local congestion then. What QoS settings are you using currently?

My settings are as follows:
Anti bufferbloat: always
Goodput disabled[enabled seems to make it worse]
My connection settings are supposed to be 100mbs/4mbs and in practice its 92/3.5
Slider is set to 60% down and 40% up
The desktop and laptop in traffic prioritization are set as Gaming Console
I have 3 desktops and 1 laptop connected to the router, netflix tv streamer, a simple IoT device and 3 smartphones
While it sounds like allot of devices for such a connection most of them are not actually on, at most there will be 3 computers and a streamer running at the same time, I'm not sure if its traffic congestation as with the old router it worked fine, I'm talking allot about the old router as a good device but it had its own set of problems that made me get rid of it.
- Netduma-FraserApr 26, 2020NetDuma PartnerDefinitely remove those Traffic Prio rules, that must be making it worse. Make a custom Traffic Prio rule for the PC source 1-65535, destination 50000 - 65535 TCP/UDP and then see if Discord is better.

That fixed it completely, both Discord and the picture freeze in windows remote desktop
Thank you Netduma-Fraser

It worked fine yesterday but now the same issue is back. I'm being driven crazy by it
I do have a observation, I am sitting on my desktop connected to my laptop with remote desktop and I have a gif of a spinning globe running on the laptop.
The discord packet loss on my desktop always happen when the animated globe is frozen, its like whatever is happening is affecting the whole network
I even tried downgrading to the oldest firmware but there was no change
- Netduma-FraserApr 28, 2020NetDuma PartnerAhh, just thought of something, your upload speed is quite low and both these applications will require upload. Change Anti-Bufferbloat upload to 100% and see if it works then. If it does then that is the issue and you can gradually try decreasing that in small increments to see what you can get to while it still works.

I tried but that didn't do anything.
Its something with the router's processing of ethernet, on my phone I get 0 packet loss.
- Netduma-FraserApr 29, 2020NetDuma PartnerWhen you experience this go to the Network monitor, how much bandwidth is your device getting? Does it seem restricted?

Working from home during this quarantine and spending lots of time on discord with friends so I thought I'd treat myself to a nice router and replaced my NETGEAR (R6700) - AC1750 with this XR500 today. Discord became instantly unusable.
I can connect to the servers just fine, but when others talk I hear every other word and they say the same about me. I had absolutely no such issues with the R6700. This is a gigabit fibre connection and I am wired with CAT6 directly to the router. I have tried disabling all the traffic prioritization, and I've also tried giving Discord special access. No luck.

Swapped my R6700 back in and all discord/internet problems instantly were resolved.

It seems like the bandwidth is fine Netduma-Fraser
It seems like our problem is the same iamjonmiller
Here are my observations so far:
This isn't just affecting Discord its affecting the entire network even internal LAN connections[remote desktop from two computers both connected with ethernet to the router], ~50% packet loss on real time applications
When I restart the router at the begining when it first connects to the internet there are a couple of seconds of grace period where there is 0% packet loss and everything is acting as it should be, the end of this grace period corresponds with the DumaOS on routerlogin.net becoming available
Its not the firmware because I downgraded as far as I could and the same behavior was there
Its not anything physical with my internet connection or hardware, I connected my entire setup to my old router and packet loss was 0% and everything was behaving as it should in both Discord and remote desktop
For the sake of testing I switched back to my old router and connected the XR500 to it, when I connect my desktop to the old router I get 0% packet loss and when I connect my desktop to the XR500 in this setup I get the 50% packet loss
At this point I don't know what to do, I opened a ticket with netgear but it doesn't seem like there will be a response in a timely manner and the return period on the router is ending next week, I will probably return it unless theres a solution
- iamjonmillerApr 30, 2020Aspirant
Yeah it definitely is touching more than discord. I'm just going to return as well. Really a tragedy.
- Netduma-FraserApr 30, 2020NetDuma PartnerCould you both download a program called PingPlotter please and then do two plots, one to the router LAN IP (by default 192.168.1.1) and then another one to a local website please and post the screenshots.

You know the interesting thing the moment I started the tracing the packet loss dropped from 50% to 10% in Discord, its amazing.
Anyway please see this imgur album, I also included the Discord graph at the same time and I also included for reference the same tracerts with my old router and for the record the packet loss with my old router to Discord during the test was essentially zero
- Netduma-FraserApr 30, 2020NetDuma PartnerThis is even more confusing. There are no issues pinging to each of the routers themselves however you seem to get some packet loss towards the last hops on the XR but not the old router. Even though it's far away from the router so that shouldn't be affecting it. In WAN Settings could you click Disable SIP ALG please as that can affect VOIP.
- zzezApr 30, 2020Aspirant
It was already disabled
The following options in WAN Setup are checked:
Disable IGMP Proxying
NAT Filtering Open
Disable SIP ALG
Please look at this tracert I think its more interesting, its directly to the Discord voip server I am on
I included the old router as reference aswell
also I have noticed that the moment I started the tracert the packet loss from Discord went from 50% to 10% and this is reminding me of a issue that I had about 10 years ago, I used to play ArmA2 on a US server and sometimes I would get absurdly high packet loss and the solution to it was to run a constant ping to the server, it would somehow fix it and I have a feeling the tracert is doing the same thing here.
- Netduma-FraserApr 30, 2020NetDuma PartnerYou're experiencing packet loss on both there. I've never heard of an issue like that being resolved with a ping, that is really strange. My first thought is the built in Windows 'QoS' might be interfering. Follow this guide and then reboot https://www.howtoguides.org/disable-bandwidth-limit-in-windows-7-speed-up-your-internet it should work for Win 10 as well, then try please.
