Quickly, I am not new to networking/routing or devices used in these fields. But I have been working on this issue for over a year on and off as I had time, but I would really like to resolve this. ...

How are you trying to update the firmware? Are you doing it manually by downloading the firmware file from support.netgear.com, then uploading it to the router? Or are you trying to use the router's auto-update functionality?
