Answers to the questions.
Yes my modem is just a modem and not a combo router/modem
It's a standard spectrum unit supplied for gigabit service. I don't know the manufacturer.
The reason I have to reset frequently is because I lose internet service frequently. The network stays up but I lose online service, LED indicator goes red.
As I mentioned, if I reboot the modem first (as instructed by the ISP) then the XR500, the internet LED indicator remains red and I get no online service.
If I reboot the XR500 first, then the modem I get internet.
When speaking to the tech help at spectrum, they seem to indicate that this is a problem.
I suspect the reason I'm losing service a lot is when the ISP makes a change, the XR500 isn't dynamically following suit. Why not is the mystery. All the settings are correct, as far as I can tell.
ISP tech help thought It might be a bad WAN cable. I've tried 3. No change in this behavior.

If I reboot the XR500 first, then the modem I get internet. Certainly not the norm, but also not that unusual.

When you reboot the modem, disconnect the coax for a few minutes then reconnect before you restore the power. This provides a reset for some of the internal circuitry. If you have access, you may have to start looking at the signal power levels activity logs on the modem.
