Parent Control issue with Orbi is creating a new device every time it connects

I have an orbi router with 3 satellites. Im wondering if this is a hack from teenagers trying to get around the parent controls. there are certain devices that are on kids profiles which turn up multiple times on the default connection profile for new devices (well over 10 versions of the same device). So I set parent controls up on certain devices but it seems to be a big waste of time and money.

  • When Orbi routers encounter a device with a MAC address that has never connected before, the router sees it as "new" and assigns it an IP address different from any known device.  This can happen for two reasons:

    • The device has been set to randomize the MAC address and has chosen to present a new MAC address to the router.  The latest operating systems from Apple, Android, and Microsoft (laptops) default to this behavior.  Search for "random MAC address" for articles explaining this behavior.  or......
    • The user of the device has set it to present a different MAC address, which triggers exactly the same response.

Controlling internet use of teenagers is a battle of wits that parents often struggle with.  If the teenager has administrative control over their devices, the battle may already be over.

  • Something to check into that may have more controls for you on the router that they can't get past, check into OpenDNS or NextDNS services. See if any of there controls may be of help.
