When Orbi routers encounter a device with a MAC address that has never connected before, the router sees it as "new" and assigns it an IP address different from any known device. This can happen for two reasons:
- The device has been set to randomize the MAC address and has chosen to present a new MAC address to the router. The latest operating systems from Apple, Android, and Microsoft (laptops) default to this behavior. Search for "random MAC address" for articles explaining this behavior. or......
- The user of the device has set it to present a different MAC address, which triggers exactly the same response.
Controlling internet use of teenagers is a battle of wits that parents often struggle with. If the teenager has administrative control over their devices, the battle may already be over.
