Alternatives to orbi?? (considering replacing already)
Currently have RBK853 (router and 2 satellites) failing woefully with all these horrible firmware updates and unfortunately I just don't have the time to be a member of the Netgear Beta testing t...

Ok. I'd say something on the modem is not blocking addresses correctly. Something the ISP should have a look into. Would be kind of concerning if the modem isn't blocking any addresses...

Hopefully will be getting an ONT with fttp next week, so may need to just wait till then and hopefully just use the orbi as a router plugged straight into the ONT.
in the meantime I'll speak to sky and find out why the firewall isn't doing its job properly.
could it be that the lastest firmware is already downloaded and stored on the orbi and that is why its saying its still available to upgrade?
- FURRYe38Oct 18, 2021Guru - Experienced User
Need to check to see if the new ONT has a built in router or not. If not, then you need to downgraded to the early version of V3 and use the telnet method to block NG updates.
No, it just checks to see if the services has an update. Each time you log out of the web page or nagivate to some other place on the RBRs web page then go back to FW updates, and then check, the the RBR will attempt to query the NG service to see whats out there. If the upstream router is blocking correctly, the RBR will report "service not reachable". I've done this many times in testing myself.

Firewall blocks definitely didnt work... orbi has forced updated to latest v4 again :(
No wonder so many people box these up and return them!
- FiiJaSOct 19, 2021GuideHi guys.
Let's back to topic.
I've tested a couple of days the Linksys Velop.
Connection is stable, WiFi signal also stable.
I'm not noticed any dropping etc. So positive ...
Now the downsides... System/Functions are pretty bare-bones .... What I miss is fully support of VLAN . I have to use between ISP modem still ISP router or switch with VLAN. Support will nothing to promise...
After reading last couple of posts in this thread I decided to keep Velop. - stu3886Oct 19, 2021Apprentice

After reading last couple of posts in this thread I decided to keep Velop.Question on the Linksys... does the little light on the top stay permenatly on when connected? or does it go off like the orbi? only ask as I have one of the satellites in a bedroom.
Can you turn off the 5ghz range so that it makes connecting 2.4ghz smart home devices easier to connect?
Can you disable firmware updates so we don't have the same issues like we do with netgear?

Again. linksys have bare-bone options.
- Light stays blue - there is no option to turn off. The blue light is not so ,,intense" Satellites are the same as parent unit. I mean You can choose which one wil be ,,parent" Satellites working in bridge mode. I can check tonight how bad is this led light...
-there is no option to turn off the 5Ghz network.
- Yes. You can uncheck ,,install updates automatically" Updates are not so offten at linksys ( it's also not so good) In one year time there was 3 updates ...

Not sure if the below is stil accurate but it looks like you can split the SSID's on the velop even if you cant turn off the 5ghz range?
Login to the linksys router IP... From there, go to Router Settings > Wifi Settings > "Separate Wifi Settings" > "Show more". Provide a name for the 2.4 GHz and another for the 5 GHz (such as "HomeWifi" and "HomeWifi-5G"). You will be warned about setting up different Wifi names. Click on "Use different names". The Velop will restart, and you will now have two SSIDs
- FiiJaSOct 19, 2021GuideYes. It's true. I can give other name so we can keep both range separate.
- Yippie123Oct 19, 2021AspirantI’m considering to add orbi 852 mesh but reluctant after reading this forum. How about Orbi Pro? Does it hv the similar unstable/unusable issue similar to the non pro version?
Thanks in advance - FURRYe38Oct 19, 2021Guru - Experienced User
You'll need to use to use the telnet method then. Seems like your ability to block using your host router isn't working.

can you recommend which Firmware is the best to downgrade to so that this can be done?

I think I saw a post you had the 8 series, if so, "last version of FW that has Telnet on the debug page is V3.2.11.2. All versions beyond that do not have telnet on the debug UI web page,"

Downgraded to V3.2.11.2_1.2.13 and have telnet in to disable upgrade on the router. I cant work out how to do this for the satellites though? is it required?
Will the satellites still upgrade themselves automatically even if the router is saying service unreachable?
Model Name Device Name Current Firmware Version Status Router RBR850 RBR850 V3.2.11.2 Service unreachable Satellite RBS850 Orbi Satellite-1 V3.2.11.2 V4.6.3.16 Satellite RBS850 Orbi Satellite-2 V3.2.11.2 V4.6.3.16 - FURRYe38Oct 20, 2021Guru - Experienced User
Good question.
Looking at the users post regarding the telnet method, he seems to inidicate that both RBR and RBS needs that telnet config:
4. Enable Telnet option on both Router and the Satellite in their Debug.html page.
5. Telnet connect to both devices, and ran the following code to block.
Seems that the RBS need this telnet config as well. - stu3886Oct 20, 2021Apprentice
so i ran all the below on the RBR and both RBS's and it still says status V4.6.3.16 for the satellites :(
the router is all good and says service unreachable, but very worried about the satellites auto upgrading.

Back to the topic, looking at Costco, they have TP-Link Deco AX5700 and Linksys Velop AX4200 systems. Any experience, thoughts?
- FURRYe38Oct 22, 2021Guru - Experienced User
It would be recommended to visit those Mfrs forums and look to see what there users are experiencing with there products. I presume those users would have more information and experiences and post about it there.
Remember this is a NG forum. :smileywink: - SergeLOct 22, 2021ApprenticeI know, I'm more curious about the opinions of people who did switch from Orbi to Velop or TP-Link products
- FURRYe38Oct 23, 2021Guru - Experienced User
I would not recommend TP-Link anything.
- SergeLOct 24, 2021ApprenticeI ordered Linksys Velop and should get it on Wednesday. My Orbi currently runs on v3, but I'm running into issues with switching devices between satellites, and somehow, Quicken now stopped synchronizing with the cloud. Planning to compare speed and stability.

Reading https://www.reddit.com/r/LinksysVelop , second-guessing myself ...
- e46tiagOct 24, 2021AspirantI went to from orbi 852 to orb pro sk80 because of the issues after recent forced firmware upgrades. The latest firmware for the orbi pro at the time had similar issues as the orbi. But I was able to use an older firmware and it gives an option to not auto update. Everything works like a dream. There is now a newer firmware but I won’t bother upgrading.
- Yippie123Oct 24, 2021AspirantWhich firmware version are you on now for orbi pro ?
- e46tiagOct 24, 2021AspirantI’m on V3.1.1.102 which works great so I’m not touching it.
- FiiJaSOct 24, 2021GuideI have no any issues with Velop (2xMX5300 parent in router mode, satellite in bridge mode) expect bare-bone functions. Also I noticed that on the Linksys velop page was new firmware available but velop won't update (doesn't saw new version) I had to update manually
