ATT 1G Fiber with Orbi AX6000

Recently had ATT 1G fiber installed and set up Orbi Wifi 6 Mesh AX6000 with router and 1 satellite.  I've set up the ATT BGW into passthrough mode and disabled the Wifi in order to only have one Wifi signal through the Orbi mesh.  I've also disabled certain firewall settings on the BGW and do not have Armor on the Orbi.  I've changed out the ethernet cable to both CAT6 and CAT7 for various tests.

Speed to the ATT and Orbi router are 900Mb+.  And depending on proximity to the Orbi router and satellite, I'm seeing a link rate up to 960Mbps on the 5Ghz band on connected devices when checking the Orbi App Device Manager.

However, when I run a speed test (Via Speedcheck app), I'm only testing at 350Mbps (D) / 216Mbps (U).  Are there ways or settings I'm missing that is causing such a degradation compared to the link rate?

  • So you're testing on your phone using its own app?
If so, that phone might be the bottleneck in the speeds with its connection to the router.

    Plus distance and interference.

    what device is it?

When you're speedtesting, what link speed do you have? (hint, link speed isn't the same as actual throughput. throughput tends to be 55-65% of link speed for 5ghz)

I'm testing on an iPhone 11 Pro.  When initially testing through the ATT BGW router via 3rd party app Speed Test, I was getting 800Mbps+ when standing next to the router.  However, speed dropped precipitously inside my home due to the router location in the garage.

Hence the need for the Orbi Mesh.

Link Rate for device Orbi App:  960Mbps

      Speed via 3rd Party App (Speed Test):  350Mbps (D) / 250Mbps (U)

You will see a faster drop off in speeds. 5ghz doesn't broadcast as far or through as much materials as 2.4ghz. But 2.4ghz is a extremely slow network. So a little different starting points.

You say the router is in the garage? And how far away is the satellite?

Is the satellite hardwired in or running off the wireless backhaul?

If you hardwire a pc/laptop into the satellite and test it, what speeds do you get?
