AX6000/RBK852 Wired Backhaul mode - Guest Network - No internet when connected through the satellite
I just bought a AX6000/RBK852 (RBK850/RBS850) with the lattest firwmare V3.2.16.6. I have a lan cable connected between my main and the satellite (wired backhaul mode). I have a guest network too. W...

I finally updated to v3.2.17.12.
After a reboot (exactly 2 reboot of the RBR as for some reason there was no internet connection during the first reboot and one reboot of the RBS), guest network is working correctly with the satellite in Wired Backhaul mode.
I did not need to do factory reset / reload my configuration.
Finally Netgear was able after 6 months to fix this basic function.
I wrote to the support desk to tell them the issue was solved.
FURRYe38 thanks for your help during these 6 months...

If I use .0.1 then yes I changed it.
I prefer to turn OFF the RBS and then back on after a major change, just to be sure they re-synd on there own and collect the new data and configuration. Seems to keep them more stable. Seen odd issues with Orbi systems over the years.
I don't use Guest Network much so it's mostly disabled. Any changes are doen with Guest Network disabled then re-enabled afterwards. I would try this, reset and setup from scratch, go in and set 10.somenthing on the RBR and let it apply. Turn ON The RBS and let them synce and make the change. Then, enable Guest Network and see if it works, if it does report this to NG.
Hopefully they can reproduce your problem and if so, get it fixed.

Hello
I did a few more test:
- I tried to change the IP range from 192.168.1.1 to 10,0,1,1 when Guest Network was disabled with RBS off but once I re-enabled it, it was the same issue.
- Then I have reset everything and kept the 192.168.1.1 and enabled the Guest Network. I did some Access Control modifications and Address reservation set-up and the problem is back, even with 192.168.1.1
It looks like any modification in the settings will make the satellite not working in wired backhaul with the guest network.
Do you use Access Control ?
Do you have Adress Reservation in your LAN Setup ?
I am waiting to get contacted byt Netgear Specialist. Hopefully I will get an explication.

Thanks for coming back to me.
What is really buggy is that you cannot go back to the previous state by undoing an operation. Once you lose the guest network in wired backhaul with the Satellite, the only way is to start from scratch. I have enough of testing. There is nothing else I can do on my side now.
I have to know now if Netgear can reproduce the issue, and fix it. Support have escalated the problem to a senior technician so I am pretty sure I will know very soon.
Otherwise I will have to go back to my old Time Capsule/Airport Express set-up and find another solution somewhere else.
I am really disappointed so far !

Ok, keep in touch with support. I may take a bit for them to get it fix. So if you need guest network to work right, I would connect the RBS via wireless backhaul for now.
- philoouuAug 26, 2020LuminaryWireless backhaul is reducing the speed by 2 versus wired backhaul... on some of my devices. I could change the set-up so that wired devices are not going though the satellite so that they are not affected. But I cannot do anything on wireless devices.
It looks like an easy bug to fix so I hope it will be sorted before I move to another solution. - philoouuSep 02, 2020Luminary
So far I have no luck with the support team.
It has been escalated but nobody has tried to reproduce the problem for the moment...
They proposed me to return the unit and try another one but that makes a lot of work for me (as I have to contact the local Netgear) and that does not make lots of sense as other users have this issue. Having the guest network working on the wired backhaul satellite with original factory settings and having it not working as soon as the settings are changed looks more like a bug than anything else to me.
I am disappointed and I will wait for another few days.
Any advice to speed up the process with support team ?
Thanks

THis would be someting NG needs to review and look at. This is something that is not fixed over night and will take time. Theres notthing we can do from three side of the fence. I would return the unit and get your money back while you can. Maybe come back at a much later date and give another one a try.
Good Luck.

I finally sent a strong message to support telling them it was not acceptable they could not find 10 minutes to try to reproduce this issue. Obviously with the Covid/Working at home situation, you need support team on site to have the devices to test. This is why it may take some more time.
For the moment I want NG to reproduce the issue so they can confirm or not the issue. Firmware fix takes more time for sure, but probably not so much if NG considers it is a serious issue.
Wired backhaul is part of the specs of this product so NG may consider it is a "serious issue" if they can reproduce it.

So I wanted to take another look at this today. I got my Orbi AX out and put it online. Router mode. RBS wired to RBR with 1 Gb non managed switch in between them. RBS connected first wirelessly then I conencted the ethernet cable. Both connections stable.
I enabled Guest network on the RBR first before getting the RBS. I can't tell from the RBS web page if Guest Network is running however checking my wifi analyzer I see two separate Guest Network SSIDs. I used default Netgear- Guest SSID name and gave my own PW. WPA2 and AES only.
Connected to devices to the Guest Network.
I found they were connected to the RBS:
RBR reported same 5G Guest on i'ts web page:
I see 5G Guest so this tells me they are connected to the Guest Network.
I opened up ooklas speed test app on both iphone and android pad. Both tested successfully.
I then opened up the YouTube app on each and streamed video at the same time.
I opened up my mail program on the iphone and it got email messages successfully.
I can't say that I can reproduce this issue of Guest Network not working when the RBS is ethernet connected.

Guest Network through wired backhaul satellite is working with me until I change the address IP range to 10.0.1.x and/or modify the Access Control.
If you feel like trying modifyng on of those 2 options we could see the results.
Thanks

How are you configuring Access Controls?
- philoouuSep 03, 2020Luminary
Yes I do.
But changing the IP range to 10.0.1.x without touching Access Control is enough to make it bug at my place.

Ok, well I just tried again with 192.168.85.1 and enabled Access Controls and set Allow All. My two devices were connected at the wired RBS and still got internet services.
I then turned OFF the RBS, reconfigured 10.0.1.1 on the RBR and rebooted it. Guest Network and access controls still enabled. Powered ON the RBS. I disconnected my two devies while I waited for the RBS to cone to ready. Re-connected the wireless devices. They both connected and got internet services. Speed test app and youtube app both work
192.168.2.x is seen for any guest network devices. My wired PC and RBS behind the RBR has a 10.0.1.x address. Both wireless devices reported as 5G Guest under connection type.

And you confirm you had wired backhaul for Satellite ? On the GUI you see wired for Satellite ?
This would mean my unit is defective ? Or I do something wrong ?
- FURRYe38Sep 03, 2020Guru - Experienced User
Yes, RBS is ethernet connected to a Gb switch then from there connected to the back of the RBR.
Same configuration and earlier today.

Thanks for doing so many test for me...
I will wait Support Team to come back to me.

Hope they can help you. Ask about an RMA.

I was looking at your signature. Looks like your firmware is 3.1.16.6, I guess you meant 3.2.16.6?
My firmware for both Routeur and Satellite is V3.2.16.6_1.4.4.
Not sure what this 1.4.4 means at the top of the GUI...
Trying to make sure we have the same firmware!
- FURRYe38Sep 06, 2020Guru - Experienced User
Yes, it's same FW. I tend to reference the last number in the main version V3.2.16.6_1.4.4 in my posts/sig. I don't know the meaning fo the _1.4.4 numbers. I presume these are some sub versioning that NG only knows about. The main number thats important is the one in bold for reference.

Thanks for your help for the last month! Looks like I will have to return my satellite and get a new one.
I need you help on something else; I want to reset the Satellite to factory reset before sending it back.
I pressed the reset button for 15 seconds then release.
But the satellite (RBS) will reboot and reconnect/resync automatically to my network and even if it says backhaul status poor or out of sync, I can connect to it by browser with my admin passowrd and it looks like working OK without using the sync buttons.
How can I get the satellite out of my network? By doing reset factory on the Router too (RBR)? At which moment do the RBR and RBS sync?
Thanks
- FURRYe38Sep 16, 2020Guru - Experienced User
Turn OFF the RBR/other RBS, then press the reset button on the one RBS your returning for 15 seconds then release. When the front LED starts to blink, power it off. Then turn on the RBR/other RBS.
- philoouuSep 16, 2020Luminary
Thanks. Let me try that later on. Once the steps you told me are finished, I will turn on the Satellite (RBS) again to make sure it does not sync automtically to my RBR and that it is completey out of my network for good.
- FURRYe38Sep 16, 2020Guru - Experienced User
No, no need to turn it ON after the RBS has been factory reset. Just put it off and get it ready for it's return.
- philoouuSep 16, 2020Luminary
How can I know it is out of my network for good? And that RBS will never connect to my RBR anymore.
From the RBR Gui it is impossile to get rid of the satellite...
- FURRYe38Sep 16, 2020Guru - Experienced User
If your sending it back for return, then you don't need to be concerned about the RBS as it don't be around to connect.
- philoouuSep 16, 2020LuminaryBut I was wondering how it works between RBR and RBS. Where is the security if RBS syncs automatically to RBR? When you buy a set RBR/RBS they connect by default?
