Cannot update RBR850 from V3.2.16.22

Hello,

I'm trying to update my RBR850 at our cabin that have been neglected for awhile. I've been at this for two days and are out of options. Details below.

Router: RBR850

Firmware: V3.2.16.22

Using online update: the router performs the check, then proceed to "Downloading Firmware" then it ends with "Update failed" - no other error details on the GUI

Using manual method. Selected the latest firmware file "RBR850-V7.2.7.15.chk" after clicking upload the GUI shows "Firmware upgrade failed. Please check your file."

After doing some searches I ran across an older firmware so I thought I'll try to incrementally update the firmware first using the files from New - Firmware Version 3.2.18.1 for RBR840-850 / RBS840-850 Released | NETGEAR Communities

Same error with the manual method. I tried Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and Edge.

What are my option here? I tried searching the telnet method but couldn't find instructions on how to use telnet to update the firmware. If anyone has a link that will be great.

  • Do you have any RBS? Or just the RBR only?

So you probably need to do the following: If you have RBS, update the RBS first, then the RBR lastly.

Since your RBR is so far behind, you'll need to apply a intermediate version to the RBS and RBR first.

I beleive you need to get from v3 to v4 FW, try loading this version first as this was first v4 version after all v3 was concluded:

    https://kb.netgear.com/000063918/RBR850-RBS850-Firmware-Version-4-6-3-9

Let us know if you can't get this version loaded, you might have to load very last v3 version of FW, then try v4.6.3.9.

If you can get the above loaded on the system, then try loading this first v7 FW that was first intro'd after v4 FW was concluded:

    https://kb.netgear.com/000065816/RBR850-RBS850-Firmware-Version-7-2-6-21

Hoping you don't have to load any later versions of v4 FW, let us know though. May have to load last v4 FW before going to v7.

If you can get this loaded on the system, then you should be able to load v.15 lastly on the system.

Again, if you have any RBS, load them first, then RBR lastly as you graduate updating using each FW version. This makes sure the RBS can reconnect to the RBR after it's been updated and come back to ready.

If you don't have any RBS, then this will be a little easier.

It came as a kit but I'm only using the RBR at this location. The RBS upgraded just fine with another setup.

Just tried the V4.6.3.9 link suggested above. Same error: "Firmware upgrade failed. Please check your file."

Funny enough. I found another post with your suggestions on TFTP mode.

I have RBR750, May i know how to get to flash mode TFTP | NETGEAR Communities

I'm able to get it to connect and flash with nmrpflash but it failed with  "TFTP block rollover. Upload might fail!" because the firmware is over 32mb. I'm at least on the 20th times trying to use tftp64 but the timing is near impossible as you mentioned in the post. With nmrpflash at least I can get it run and force factory reset and it'll jump right into tftp mode.

Happy to report back that I've successfully got it up to date. Thanks to numerous posts by FURRYe38 ! Leaving it here in case anyone else runs into this issue. Something is definitely fishy with the stock V3.2.16.22 that came with the router.

After 20+ attempts to get TFTP to upload the V4.6.3.9 firmware as suggested by FURRYe38 I got it to successfully upload. Once the RBR is up to V4. Update to V7.2.6.21 was a breeze. The online update works for V7.7.15
