Connecting 2.4Ghz Cameras to Orbi Wifi 6 Mesh

Hi all, I know there have been many posst about this topic already, and I have reviewed each but it appears that my issue is unique.

I have a recently acquired Orbi Wifi 6 Mesh system that includes the RBR850 and it's RBS850 satellite.  Overall, when using laptops, desktops, general PC equipment and phones, everything is fantastic. However, I have three cameras that require 2.4Ghz only and these are giving me problems.

They worked previously on a Telstra Smartmodem Gen II. When cutting over to the Orbi, they connected Ok but they had dropout issues as if they were not getting signal strenght. However, the Orbi app is telling me Camera1 has 91% signal and 72Mb channel to the RBR850, and Camera2 has 86% and 72Mb to the Satellite RBS850.

When they work, they're great, but mostly they don't. Drop outs every few minutes or every 10 - 20 seconds or so and sometines outages for as long as 30 minutes befoe suddenly being Ok for an hour then repeats again.

I have changed to Channel 11 but the problem remains.

I powered up an old one and stuck it indoors about 6 feet closer to the RBR and that's working Ok. I don't believe it's a range issue as the app is giving me good numbers but I don't know how accurate the App is.

Can anyone make any suggestions ?

Many thanks.

  • This is a common issue, ven when setting up existing wireless cameras on an new wireless system.

Reset the cameras and configure them as if you just took them out of the box. This should correct the issues you are experiencing. the only other possibility may be channel interference. Use a program like WifiInfoView or NetSpot and change the 2.4Ghz channel to a channel with less traffic.

Thanks. I've reset them numerous times as if they were out of the box by resetting to factory default.

I've also tried Channel 11 which didn't make much of a difference, but I'll try yoru suggestion. Note that the orbi app also shows networks per channel, is this info as reliable as the apps you mention ?

Also, my goal is get these working on the Guest wifi channel so that I have a seperate `VLAN' or network for the cameras segregated from the rest of the network. Do you see any issues there with 2.4Ghz?

      Regards,

I have installed many RBK853 systems with no issues whatsoever. I've even used them to replace RBK53 systems, naming the SSID the same as old, and all devices except a few connect right back up.

You can use the Orbi app WIFI Analytics to see your close neighbors WIFI channel usage. I would suggest using 1, 6 or 11 as they non-overlap.

Setting up the cameras on the guest WIFI is no issue at all. You just have to point the cameras to the guest WIFI.
