Fast Roaming/Switching

I have the Orbi 853 system. I have noticed that my devices are holding unto specific devices for a long time before switching to a closer satellite. Does the system support fast switching where once I have changed locations and closer to another satellite that my connection from the device is transferred there?

I checked the settings through the browser but not seeing anything that matches what I am looking for.

Please help.

  • Yes and it's all automatic so no user configurations on Orbi AX systems. Fast Roaming is also device specific and it's up to those devices to roam as they see fit. Something to contact the mfr about for these devices.

As FURRYe38 pointed out, Fast Roaming is the default on the 850 product and cannot be controlled by the user.

    Would you mind identifying

    • the specific sort of devices which appear not to roam quickly enough, and
    • how you determine that they are not switching quickly?
The Orbi Attached Devices display (and Orbi 'app' Connected Devices) do not update instantly.  For example, often when I arrive home, my phone will connect to the satellite in the garage.  I come upstairs and sit four feet away from the router and Attached Devices says I am connected to the garage satellite for several minutes. My understanding is that Attached Devices relies on a timer that wakes up periodically and scans the internal connection tables to build the table used for the web page.

It is a bit frustrating that many (almost all?) devices report the SSID that they have connected to, but not the specific access point.  I was really surprised to find that my Samsung Galaxy Tablet actually shows the MAC address of the access point in the Network settings.
