Having Trouble with Ethernet Backhaul

Hello,

I'm fairly new to this and am hoping someone can help. I have CenturyLink Fiber Internet. They originally game me their Axon C4000 modem/router. It's so big it didn't fit in my patch panel and I really didn't want it sitting outside the patch panel as I wanted that area clean and free of Ethernet cables running everywhere. I put the CenturyLink modem in bridge mode and purchased an Orbi router with two satellites. I was able to completely eliminate the CenturyLink modem/router by using my PPoE credentials on the Orbi router and setting up the VLAN settings.

The router is configured as follows:

The main Internet port is plugged into the WAN port on the router. I have three levels in my home and each level has one Ethernet jack. Those are all activated and working when I plug devices directly into them with download speeds of over 900MB. I have both of my Orbi Satellites plugged into each Ethernet jack on each floor. But when I plug in other devices directly to the Ethernet jacks on the back of the satellites I'm only getting download speeds of up to 330MB. If I unplug the satellite and test the speed by just being directly plugged in the wall I get up to 950MB down.

What am I doing wrong? in the GUI it says the Ethernet Backhaul status is GOOD and connected via Wired method. How can I get faster speeds when they are all hard wired on each floor?

  • Sometimes terminology can be confusing (such as "main internet port", WAN port, etc.)  It would help to see a rough diagram of how things are connected. (Might be useful to know which model of Orbi router and satellites.)

Since the Axon C4000 is no longer in the picture, what is the Orbi router Internet (WAN - yellow) port connected to?

I'm presuming that the Orbi is at the patch panel and there are patch cords connecting Orbi router LAN ports to ethernet that runs to the two satellite locations?

    Thanks

    • In the patch panel I have four white Ethernet cables that run to each floor in the house and one blue Ethernet cable which is my Internet. That cable is plugged into the yellow WAN port on the Orbi router. The four other Ethernet cables in the patch panel are plugged into ports 1-4 in the router. These correspond to the four single Ethernet jacks around the house.

I have two Orbi Satellites (RBS850) plugged into the wall directly via Ethernet. However, when I plug devices directly into the satellites I only get about 330MB down. If I unplug the satellite from the Ethernet jack in the wall and test the speed by using my laptop directly its about 950 down.

        Totally at at sea here.
        1. Does the Orbi attached devices page show the back haul as wired?
        2. The 850 had a recent firmware update. Is it current?
