Orbi 750 as cable connected wifi extender.
Hi, I moved to a new place with ethernet cables going from a central room into all rooms. I plan to use a switch and put my orbi devices into different rooms, all connected to this switch, for wifi...
You should go
modem--->router---->switch/satellites
Otherwise if you're going modem/ont-----switch-----orbi (in router mode) the devices connected to the switch might be getting a public ip address from your ISP and not one of the private one from the router. Plus its less secure.
What actual system do you have? There's the CBK version of the orbi that is coax cable only and the RBK version that is a router.
So if you have fibre, its good to know what router you're starting with.
I'm not 100% sure but my Orbi does only router stuff. I was on comcast and before I have coax coming to a modem and then ethernet to orbi. I imagine that on fiber it would be similar that I'll have a fiber modem stuff but not sure.
So my setup would look like:
- ISP
- Modem
- Switch
- Orbi main
- Orbi satellite
- Orbi satellite
- Ps5 and stuff
Am I understanding correctly?
Also, I'm still fascinated that a switch can magically do all the traffic for me that it just works after I have ethernet plugged in and I can just sit back and enjoy its hard work. It's not like that the switch has a WAN port like on a router (and I don't understand the difference). Or have I missed anything?
