Orbi 960, adding switch and network failure
Hi all, Info: Orbi 960 router and 2 satellites. Firmware 7.6.31_5.0.24 Cat 5e cables throughout. Netgear GS308v3 unmanaged switches Motorola MB8611 Cable modem I have factory reset every...

Guys thanks for the help on this.
So 2 things.
1. I switched out cable connecting router to the Netgear 16 Port switch, and am now getting 945Mbps, Network solid (wired and wireless).
2. I continued attaching ethernet devices to the switch and apparently my Airport Express 1st Gen was the cause of the network failure. I am going to have to figure out how to set this up or give up on it. ( I used to use it for Apple Airplay - music streaming). It may be more trouble than it is worth.

Thanks for posting the pictures. Very helpful.
The GS308 switches are gigabit only, so there is nothing to be gained by connecting them to the 2.5GB port on the router or satellites. (I seem to recall seeing a number of posts on the forum reporting issues with the 2.5GB ports, but have not paid a lot of attention since I do not have this model Orbi.)
Have you tried connecting the switches only to gigabit ports?

Hi,
Thanks for looking over the post and the problem.
I did try with switching out to just using the 1 gigabit ports (avoiding the 2.5 ports on the router and the wired satellite). It still presents the same issue: devices on the switch are not seen, wireless and wired internet comes to a literal stop.
I'm wondering at this point if something is wrong with the way the router is transmitting from its ports? I just don't know.
As mentioned when I revert the setup back to Setup 1, everything is rock solid and fast, but I'm out of ports for any new wired devices.

I guess IF there is no proper " fix", would one of these 2 ideas work as a work around since I have invested $$$ in the Orbi system:
1. Buy a wireless router, put it bridge mode and plug it into one of the switches (or use the new wireless router on its own) to provide a "wireless" set of ports. The wireless router would connect to the wifi of the Orbi router.
2. Buy one of these "Wifi 6 AX3000wifi to ethernet adapters" and plug into one of the switches I have to mmake it "wireless". It would connect to the Orbi router via wifi. https://www.amazon.com/BrosTrend-AX3000-Ethernet-Adapter-Gigabit/dp/B0CC21YTZP/ref=asc_df_B0CC21YTZP/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=693369603354&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=7873786988481645874&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9031948&hvtargid=pla-2284068992795&psc=1&mcid=7ce29b3861f93b70afe1aeac9d6cf43e&gad_source=1
Or would these 2 above fail? Trying to avoid "wired" switch into Orbi router as that seems to be issue.

Looking at the network pictures again, it seems that adding the 3rd switch (connecting router and 3 devices) is the common denominator for all failed configurations. I wonder if this switch (a) is a lemon, or (b) has a wiring issue (bent pins?) that is causing network loops. What about:
- Temporarily break the connection from router to the rest of the network, and
- Swap one of the other switches to place between the router and nearby devices.
I have used both Netgear and TP-Link unmanaged switches exactly as shown for years. These are so inexpensive that it might be worth spending $25 to get another GS-308 (or equivalent).

I have already tried those 2 suggestions and the issue still occurs.
1. I tried just running a long ethernet cable from the Orbi Router to an Orbi satellite (so hardwiring it) with no switches on the network. As soon as I add any switch to the Orbi Router ports (2.5 port, 1gig port) the system issue rears its head
2. I tried swapping out the Netgear GS308 for a Netgear GS116 (6 port unmanaged) and a D-Link 16 port DGS-1016D (this one allows turning off EEE), and still same issue.
