Instead of crippling your system, why not work at fixing the laptop?
What wireless chipset is in it and what driver is it running?
Some laptops you can upgrade the wireless card in them. That might be worth checking into.
Or buying a cheap usb wireless adapter to connect to it.
I'd go that route over decreasing the performance of your system.
