When i had the wired backhaul set up, it was:
cable modem -> wire -> RBR -> wire -> 24-port switch -> wire -> RBS
The house is wired with cat 6e.
The symptom then was the sattellites wouldn't show up on the network map and all the devices connected to them showed up as "wired" in the list of connected devices. I also had an incident where the sattelites took it upon themselves to disable WPA authentication and leave my WiFi completely open but that hasn't happened again.

What is the Mfr and model# of the ethernet switch in the configuration?
The house is wired with cat 6e. 5e or 6? There is no 6e.

You need to first sync them wirelessly to the RBR and ensure they are FULLY Synced wirelessly. Once the BLUE LED turns OFF and you ensure the security IS setting on the RBS, and status reports GOOD on the RBR, then connect the ethernet cable to the RBS. Lets check your switch first. There are known issues with some switches causing problems.

Sorry, it's 5e. My bad.
I turned the second sattelite back on and connected directly from the router to the sattelites without the switch in the middle. Switch is still connected for wired devices. It usually took a day or two for the sattelites to disappear so I'll wait and see.
Do you want to turn this part of the conversation into its own post so that I can mark it as solved if this fixes the backhaul problem?

What Rev model is this switch? I see several.
From a Rev G model I see the following that could be effecting RBS when ethernet connected:"IEEE 802.3x Flow Control (can be enabled/disabled1)
802.3az EEE reduces power consumption significantly (can be enabled/disabled1) <We've seen this cause problems with Orbi systems. Can you try to disable this feature on the switch if you have this Rev model switch?
• Port Isolation and Broadcast Storm Control (can beenabled/disabled1)
