Outdoor satellite

I have an axe11000 and would like to add an outdoor satellite to my quad wifi 6 mesh. Thoughts?

  • Whats an AXE11000? Orbi 9 series?

Haven't tried a RBS50Y in extender mode with the 9 series however it could work.

Netgear has no satellite compatible with the AX or WiFi6E products that is rated for outdoor use.  The only outdoor rated satellite is compatible only with the original Orbi AC products.  Customers have resorted to placing an indoor rated satellite inside a weatherproof enclosure.  Or, they place an indoor satellite in a window so that 50% of the radio energy goes "outside".

If the goal is to mount a WiFi access point outside, then there are a host of options.   The key issues are:

    • How to power the unit.
    • How to connect the unit to the WiFi network.
(Typically, the goal is to use a WiFi connection because of the cost and inconvenience of penetrating the building envelop to run an Ethernet cable to the unit.  However, if there is no convenient source of power outside, then running PoE Ethernet to the extender becomes more attractive. Being low voltage, there are fewer electrical code issues with penetrating walls, etc.)

In addition to Netgear's RBS50Y  (List $379. On Amazon today at $193 https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Outdoor-Extender-existing-router/dp/B07RN9PFNX/ref=sr_1_3?crid=2R4G5U4Q3GCHE&keywords=netgear%2Brbs50y&qid=1661895148&sprefix=netgear%2Brbs50y%2Caps%2C151&sr=8-3&th=1 ) there are many other units rated for outdoor use:

    • WaveLink has several models
    • Wineguard has many models
    • Ubiquiti has several.
    • EnGenius, etc. etc.

All such units are similar in that devices which connect to them do not "roam seamlessly" between the extender and the primary WiFi network.  Thus, some devices may appear to "stick" to their original network until the signal level drops to the point that they search for a new connection.  They cannot take advantage of the internet "Fast Roaming" capability that is built into mesh networks.

How important this is can only be determined by the circumstances.

  • I use Orbi RBS50Y together with Orbi AC system to provide coverage for the doorbell and security cameras. It works perfectly well.
You can use the RBS50Y with Orbi AX but in extender mode. Never tried this mode but I don’t see a reason why it shouldn’t work.
