Might check the macbook forums to see if there's any settings for changing roaming aggressiveness. I don't have a mac but windows has one built in.

Thanks, I'll look into that.
So far no specific replies to the question about setting up one satellite as an AP, or providing it with a different SSID. I'm guessing that means it's not something that's possible with the Orib?

Not a possibility I'm aware of.
If you just want a cheap/high-performing access point in your garage, you can pickup a WAX218 off fleabay for pretty reasonable and it'll perform quite well. Or any old router in there set in access point mode.
