Another thing I have noticed is, once the network gets into this weird state, the SSID to which the smart devices were connected to, even my phone/laptop cannot connect to anymore. The thing that helps is renaming the SSID to something else (like from Foo to Foo2), and then my phone can connect. But thats the thing I do not want to do with my smart devices.

Can you please to run the following command from your MacBook that is attached to Orbi.
Use "Terminal" and run the command traceroute 8.8.8.8.
If you see two private IP addresses listed in the first two hops then you have double NAT.
