RBR750 - Static IP Address assignments

I am trying to assign a static IP address to an Amcrest security camera and went into Advanced - LAN Setup - selected my camera from the list shown - entered the IP address I wanted - hit Apply. The router rebooted under Attached Devices I have the camera in question with its 'old' router assigned address and under LAN Setup - Address Reservation I have the same camera with the address I assigned to it????

Am I going slightly mad here or have I missed something?

Thanks in anticipation

  • Be sure you understand that there is some differences between Static and IP address Reservation. Static IP address is set ON devices. IP address reservation is set ON the router.

Be sure when your adding the IP address reservation and you select ADD then it should refresh and back you out to the DHCP IP address list, that you select the APPLY button here. This will reboot the router.

Be sure you also power OFF the devices for 10 seconds then back ON while the router reboots. This should trigger the device getting the newly reserved IP address.

      Hello,

Thank you for your reply points on Static and IP Address reservation. Yes, I did remember to power cycle the cameras but no joy I am afraid the router simply had the "old" assigned IP address!

Netgear's implementation of DHCP has been a source of frustration (to me) for years.  What appears to be happening is the DHCP process does not do what any normal person would expect:

    • Router receives DHCP request.
    • Router looks in IP assignment table to see if MAC address has been assigned IP.
    • If match found, respond with that IP.
    • If match not found, find next available IP in the DHCP 'pool' and respond with that IP.

What (I swear) it does it this:

    • Router reeives DHCP request.
    • Router looks in some internal table and says, "Oh, that device was assigned IP x.x.x.x in the past"
    • Router responds with that IP.
    • Router never looks in IP assignment table.

A procedure that "works" is the deliberately restart the router. Power off and back on.  What appears to the user to be a "restart" is indeed the router "doing something", but not clearing that record of IP assignments.

Can you please try a restart and see what happens?

Thank you for your reply. Did try a cold boot of the router but no joy I'm afraid. I do not understand how the router can "be happy" with the same device mac address having two IP addresses - one it has chosen to assign and one that is shown in the Address Reservation table as being assigned.

I do not understand how anything like this managed to get through Netgear testing! - or maybe I do!

I just went through this with a new Wyze Pan Cam last week.  To be honest, I cannot remember if I powered off the camera before power cycling the router (or not).  I can remember High School pretty well, but last week - not a chance!

You are a good sport to endure this mess.  Can you try again:

        • Power off device.
        • Power cycle router.
        • Power on device.

I actually have a procedure for adding new devices:

        • Before powering the device on for the first time, copy down the device MAC address (or hold the device in my hand)
        • Open the Orbi LAN setup table.
        • Create an entry in the table for the device.
        • (Remember to "APPLY" - got me more than once)
        • THEN, plug in the new device.

With this camera, the MAC address was in such tiny print on the camera label that I read one of the characters incorrectly and entered a MAC address that didn't match.  (I also RANT about products that do not show the MAC address on the label or on the box, but that's a different issue.)
