Yes, another "ding" for Netgear. The Support web site links to a page for the RBS850 satellite, which says very clearly on page 4 of the Product Data Sheet, "What do I need? Requires RBS850 router SOLD SEPARATELY"

Alas, searching for RBS840 does not produce a link to a product data sheet for that satellite. Instead, there is a link to the RBK842 package. Really annoying.
So, it is 100% guaranteed that an RBS840 satellite will integrate with the RBR840 router. 100%.
Ordinarily, one would think that the RBS850 satellite would as well, but with no documentation, the only person who might know would be someone who owns an RBR840 and has added a satellite.
OR.... Netgear provides 90 days of "complimentary support" with purchase of an Orbi system. If this system is "new", I would think that Netgear support ought to be able to give a definite answer.

Possible that the 840 series may not have separate RBS840s that are being separately marketed. Seems like only the 850 series has separate RBS850s that are being sold separately. Though the RBS850 probably would work with the 840 series.
