RBR850 / RBS850 losing internet connection from Modem
I'm also experiencing disconnections of the RBR850 from the internet, roughly every few days. Some details: - The RBR850 is connected to a modem which I know is still providing an internet connecti...

Update:
Firmware update worked (manually)
I'm such a dummy.
I didn't realize that there were TWO firmwares, one for the router and one for the satellite.
They are not the same file, and my error message above was because I was trying to install the router firmware update onto the satellite.
Anyways, I downloaded two firmwares, one for router, one for satellite.
I installed the satellite first
Then the router, as recommended.
Both installed, as you can see below.
And now I will wait and see if this fixed the problem of lost internet connectivity. Will let you know.
But please Netgear, we really should not have to go through this to update our firmware and have a stable internet connection. I should be able to do this from the Orbi app.
Thanks for the help of both the experts who contributed above. Really appreciate the goodwill people show in helping others. 🙂

if you can have your router AND a computer connected to your modem, its not just a modem. Its a modem/router combo device. it can cause a double nat. A double nat happens when you cascade more than 1 router.

Fixes? There’s 3 options but only use 1.
1. Put the modem/gateway in modem only/pass through mode. This disables its routing functions.
2. Leave the modem/gateway in router mode but put the Netgears IP address into its DMZ. This forwards the data to the netgear. You can either leave the modem/gateway’s wireless enabled or disabled. Just make sure its using a different wifi channel to prevent interference
3. Put the Netgear into access point mode. This disables its routing functions. Wifi/ethernet still works but it does disable some features.

also, I wouldn't recommend updating over wifi or using the app. When we see corrupt firmware issues, it tends to be from people who updated over wifi or using the app. have you tried doing it with a hardwired in pc/laptop?
Also, one mistake I see is sometimes people trying to use the router firmware on the satellites. Make sure you're using the firmware for the satellites on the satellites (for the manual update)

Thanks a lot for your time. Very helpful.
Some quick responses and a follow-up question if you don't mind:
- I always leave the wifi router off on the Modem (which is an Orange Livebox fibre modem...fairly recent), so only one wifi in the house, only from RBR850
- I thought the modem was naturally in bypass mode, once the wifi is off on the Livebox. Have to find that setting on modem to force bypass mode (it's not obvious as I go through the various settings on the modem interface...if you had any clue, thanks.)
- Ideally, for me it's best if the Netgear is the router, as it should be the more capable device compared with ISP modem/router (my hunch). So ideally I would do point 1. below of your suggestions.
Question: will that still allow me to use the modem with a direct line connection to my Mac, as well as the RBR850? It's just very convenient not to have to run another (longer) ethernet cable from the RBR850 back to my Mac.
But there is another reason for it: the service I have is 2GB in total, but that only comes as 1GB per (ethernet) line off modem. So, that means off the back of the modem, I get 1GB to my Mac, and 1GB goes to the Netgear RBR850, to feed through Wifi.
If I only go with one line from the modem to the RBR850, I basically cap the system at 1GB and lose the other 1GB potential from my provider.

You can always put the netgear in access point mode.
that'd achieve your goal of using the modem/gateway and the netgear.

The problem that caused this discussion was "experiencing disconnections of the RBR850 from the internet, roughly every few days" further described as "The RBR850 blinks pink when this happens, and then there is no internet signal available to any device in the house from the RBR850".
I fail to see how the "Double NAT" issue has any bearing on the problem. If fontygal has no issues with the Mac on one network and the rest of the house on a different network, the problem is that the Orbi connection fails too often.
The obvious first step is to update the Orbi to the current firmware level by using the manual firmware update option on the Orbi web interface. Not the Orbi 'app' (shudder). This is where the Double NAT is an issue. The only way to connect to the Orbi web interface is to be on the LAN side of the Orbi, not on the ISP router (nee modem) side. Here is where that longer ethernet cable comes in (temporarily). My own preference is to connect directly to the satellite web interface by using the satellite's IP address and selecting the Firmware Update menu option. Then connect to the router and navigate to the Manual Update tab.
I am not having success finding a user manual for the Orange Livebox unit. Would it be possible to post a web link to the product description? I ask because (a) if the actual optical fiber does not go directly into the Livebox, then perhaps the Livebox can be removed, and (b) the Orbi RBR850 has a 2.5G ethernet port. If the Livebox has a similar capability, then that entire 2G internet can flow to the Orbi.
Just to be clear, I do not oppose addressing the Double NAT, which has the potential to cause problems for specific situations,
