RBR850 turns pink/magenta every day or so.
I've successfully used my RBR850 router with 2 satellites for just over 4 years. However, for the past 6 months or so, I've been starting to lose internet somewhat randomly every day or two, sometime...

You wouldn't happend to have a non managed 1Gb LAN switch handy would you?
Ya the RBR can handle it however since two different FW version are exhibiting same issue, leads me to feel there is a problem at the ISP ONT or the RBR. We need to narrow this down a bit more and if we could try a non managed 1Gb LAN switch in between the ISP ONT and the RBR, I'm hoping it might change something.
Or do you have the ISP router?
Do your neighbors have same ISP ONT and Orbi setup configuration or are they using the ISP Router?

None of the neighbors I know are using Orbi. I have a netgear proSAFE GS105E switch. Not sure if it's considered managed or not?
Are you suggesting I just put the switch in-between the output from the ONT and the router? And then basically the switch is acting as a "middle-man" of sorts to "aborb" some possible weird problem before it gets to the RBR?
In any event, that is what I did. I have the ONT connect to a port on the switch and then the RBR connected to another port on the switch.
I don't have any other router in my setup.

Yes, Just make sure any IGMP and Green Ethernet protocols are disabled on that switch. I believe thats a managed switch since it has smart switch features and a log in management web page...I consider any switch having a web UI log in and management page a managed switch.
See if this still happens if the one switch you have in the middle...
K, Nieghbors maybe using ISP router so they may not be seeing this issue.

All good. I was able to ensure that IGMP and Green ethernet are disabled on the switch. We'll see what happens the next day or so.
Thanks so much for your help! - FURRYe38Dec 28, 2024Guru - Experienced User

Just an update after two days of having the switch in-between the ziply ONT and Orbi. So far, I haven't had a dropped connection (pink light). However, there have also been times where I've gone a week before that happens. So while I'm optimistic this had a positive effect, I'm not fully convinced it's a solution yet. 🙂
Would be nice to not have to require this setup though. I.e. if it is an incompatibility/firmware bug of some sort, would be great to eventually get a fix. But I digress... - FURRYe38Dec 30, 2024Guru - Experienced User
Lets let this run for a week or so and report back.
Ya there maybe some odd FW issue at the RBR and handling a direct connection with your specific ONT unit. Only other idea would be to try a different branded and model ONT. Not sure if your ISP has anything different.

Ok no need for a week. It turned pink sometime last night. Here's what I did this morning.
1. Before doing anything, I plugged a laptop into the switch connected to the ONT. It was able to hit the internet just fine.
2. I removed that laptop from the switch.
3. I rebooted the orbi from my desktop PC.
4. The router went back to pink after going through its white-blinking phase.
5. I did step 3 again, just to make sure I wasn't crazy. I'm not. It went to pink again.
6. I then power cycled the router.
7. Again, blinking-white, then pink.
8. I did step 6 again. Same result.
9. I removed the switch and plugged the router directly back into the ONT. Then power cycled the router.
10. Everything is back up and working.
So... ? I have my own theories, but curious what anybody else thinks, since I'm no expert here.

Dang.
And this is with v.21 FW loaded?
And a factory reset on the entire system was performed?
Swapped LAN cable between the ONT and RBR? CAT6A STP is recommended.
Ya, running out of ideas here. Can only think maybe the RBR is going bad? One other way to test this would be to test the RBR out a different location with a entirely different ONT or cable modem like at a friends or families place to see if the problem follows.
Or see if you can find another RBR850 to test with. Maybe like Amazon or shopgoodwill.

- Yes, v.21 FW is loaded on the router and 2 satellites.
- No, I haven't performed a factory reset. Been avoiding it as I have a bunch of devices that have static IPs. Though can I backup and restore?
- I have tried multiple cables, several new and CAT6. I haven't check whether they were "CAT6A STP", but somehow I doubt that will help this problem.
Thanks for all your help, I truly appreciate it! But yeah, I'm thinking that it may be time for an upgrade anyway. But maybe I can find a cheap replacement as you point out.

Ya if you downgraded from v.31 to v.21, a FR was required after v.21 was applied to the system and setup from scratch.
If you have a v.21 backup file, then ya, you could apply this to be back up and running in minutes.
