RBR850 VPN stopping traffic for Appen.com
Firmware Version V7.2.6.31_5.0.24 I have started doing some gig work for Appen.com and I am continually getting a warning: when I attempt to start a job. I get this also on my laptop, on ...

Messages 6 and 7 appear to be inconsistent. i.e. the Orbi web interface says that Security is not enabled, but the Orbi 'app' says that it is enabled, correct?
My concern is that the description of Netgear Armor very clearly implies that it enables a VPN on the router to protect outgoing connections.

This is all very odd.

GM, I did mean to imply Armor was on, it is off on both interfaces:
I am planning on doing a hard reset on the router and satellite.
What do you think?
Yes this all very weird.
All those website that geo-locate your IP, show the correct geographic area - Longmont Colorado when I have IPv6 turned off, which I do now.

Just did a hard reset on router & satellite - continue to have the same issue of the Appen website detecting a VPN.
Armor is turned off on the router and there is no VPN setup on this PC, nor any PC in the home.
This is a fresh install of W11 Pro. No third party anti-virus, anti-malware, etc.
The same happens with a laptop that has a fresh install of Ubuntu 24.04.1, when connected to the internet through the NG ORBI router, whether wired or wireless - I continue get the VPN warning on the Appen website when I go to work a job.
HOWEVER, if I connect my Ubuntu laptop directly to the modem (ethernet), bypassing the NG ORBI RBK852 router, everything works - I can work the jobs at Appen.com - NO VPN warning..
There is definitely a problem with the NG ORBI software. It is making some websites think there is a VPN in use.

Should have been "did NOT mean to imply"
Excuse me please

Just curious, what happens you input the IP address of your test PC into the RBRs DMZ and apply and recheck?
If you factory reset and setup up the RBR from scratch, with out loading any features or a backup configuration from file, the RBR should not and would not be changing any traffic to a VPN flow.

Really grasping at straws now.....
Does Appen publish anything about how they determine that a VPN is in use? My initial assumption was that they detect something about the connection that "tips them off", but have no expertise in this area. First thought is something about the IP address. (But, geez, there must be thousands of IP addresses used by VPNs.)
When using those "what is my IP?" web sites, do they report exactly the same IP as:
- The Orbi web interface Advanced Tab Home Page?
- What the laptop gets when connected directly to the modem? (both as the IP assigned to the laptop and from those web sites)
It might be worth submitting a question to Appen along the lines of, "You say that I am using a VPN, but I am not using a VPN. What is causing Appen to think this?"
p.s. Thanks for posting that Orbi 'app' screen shot showing that Armor is "Activated" but the slider shows it is not Enabled.

A slew of Knowledgebase articles came out yesterday about Netgear Armor. This one clarifies what Armor VPN requires:
https://kb.netgear.com/000059435/What-features-does-NETGEAR-Armor-offer
(See the bottom item)
Thus, it appears that enabling Armor does not activate the VPN until the Armor 'app' is installed on individual devices.
Perhaps another tactic might be to change the DNS servers used by the Orbi router. Personally, I set my Orbi to use both CloudFlare (1.1.1.1) and GoogleDNS (8.8.8.8)

Although this horse may be nearly "beaten to death", could you please humor me and try the web site mentioned in this video?
Thanks
