To set up password recovery: https://kb.netgear.com/24220/How-do-I-recover-my-NETGEAR-admin-password-using-the-password-recovery-feature
Launch an Internet browser from a computer or mobile device that is connected to your router’s network.
Type http://www.routerlogin.net or http://www.routerlogin.com.
A login window opens.
Enter the router user name and password.
The user name is admin. The default password is password. The user name and password are case-sensitive.
The BASIC Home screen displays.
Select ADVANCED > Administration > Set Password.
The Set Password screen displays.
Select the Enable Password Recovery check box.
Select two security questions and provide answers to them.
Click the Apply button.
Your changes are saved.If this fails, then you'll need to factory reset and setup from scratch using a web browser:

Apologies for the slow reply from my side to your posts. They are really helpful and I've printed them off to read and work though.
An unexpected bout of illness has meant I'm behind on this sorry but thought I'd best write to say it's not forgotten and will be worked through .... fingers crossed this coming weekend.

Apologies for the delay getting back to you. Today I got chance to follow the steps you kindly sent and they worked like clockwork .... the reset, the rebuild and well, everything ... absolutely by the numbers.
I also followed your guide on the FW update and that also went perfectly, 100% perfectly. What a good way to spend a Sunday afternoon. I feared the worst but I need not have .... I now have a perfectly up top date system that I can actually access. I even bothered to do some proper device and cable labelling .... how many years has that been waiting to be done? 😁
