Re: Latest firmware for RBR860
I subscribed to a new ISP back in Nov to get an RBR860 upgrade. It came with a non public firmware version way higher than currently listed one. As I had to buy my own satellites and these updated to ...

The link you posted shows that unit as a ONT and full on built in wifi router. If your ISP Modem already has a built in router and wifi. This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended and can cause problems. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT

Couple of options,
1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.
3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the Orbi router to the modem, configure AP mode on the Orbi router.

Try option #2 first...
First try a factory reset on the 860 after v.15 is loaded on the RBS first, then RBR lastly and after you set the ONT to one of the options above. Hoping that one of the options will eliminate the issue you saw on the Orbi system. Can also try AP mode as well.
FW versions need to be on same version between the RBR and RBS.

I should have elaborated - the ISP has not deployed the built in router or wifi features and uses it as a plain ONT, supplying a Netgear RBR or allowing BYOR & satellites.
There is no SSID enabled on the ONT. I did ask them if this was a supported option and they said no as the ONT is installed separately by the fibre backbone telco (Chorus) for ISPs to come along and connect their router/modem/mesh of choice, or allow BYOR by the customer. Interestingly, they have stopped handing out the RBR and have switched to a TP-Link instead and even discourage BYOR. I wonder if they have had cost, sourcing or reliability issues with Netgear, hence changing to TP-Link. This creates a potential risk should I get a hardware failure - I'd have to buy my own replacement RBR to work with my additional satellites or switch to their TP-Link (and still buy my own satellites).

OK, just making sure with the ONT. If that is the case then thats just the interface unit for the ISP services.

I gave v15 another try but with limited time I just updated without any factory resets. Sats and RBR updated fine and came back online quickly, but within a few mins the ethernet performance from the Mac to the RBR showed the same fault - starts at 900gmps download on the speediest or there about and then quickly drops to near zero.
Reverting back to v7.2.6.31 and ethernet performance was solid 940/900 or there about.
If I get an opportunity I will try a factor reset update but I'm not convinced this is a vital step and nay only be worthwhile when devices crash when updating.

Ya, next you'll need to factory reset and setup from scratch with newer FW loaded. Mine was solid on v.15.
