Struggeling with new Orbi Set
After a couple of years my good old RBR50 Mesh kit died and I purchased a RBK762 as replacement. So I ended putting up the RBR760 at the same place as the RBR50 and swapped the RBS50 with the RBS760....

Like what for the 750 series.
There are known issues with most current FW version however one version back, Orbi 750 and 850 series is stable and solid.

I read quite some bad reviews on Amazon about issues syncing satellites, satellites dropping backhaul connection, RBRs spontaneous rebooting (and like mine did, losing configuration during reboot), dropped device handovers (which btw, I also have on the 760-series... Now, when I move through the house there is a noticeable connectivity gap when a device, e.g. an iphone moves from one satellite to another... never had that on the RBR50+Satellites), same bad web front end as I have on the 760s with very limited configuration options (like.... why can't I
- set the signal strength for each satellite individually,
- select the wifi channels on each satellite individually,
- see some decent stats what the backhaul status REALLY is... Come on..."Good", "Poor"? What is that supposed to say? And yes, there is a difference between "Good" and "Good". As I clearly see "Good" could mean I get 100mbps connection, which is like 1/10 of the available bandwitdth of my FFTH connection and way below the limit of the 5GHz network both for backhaul and for the device connectivity)
- force the backhaul to use 5GHz, why can I configure nothing at all about the backhaul... like tell a satellite X to always connect to a satellite Y to reach router Z.
- and so on...)
To be honest, I was a huge fan of the RBR50 and "upgrading" to 760-series feels like a massive downgrade. Espacially the wifi coverage provided is ridicoulous and does not live up to the promises - at all... Netgear claims for the RBK762S "Upgrade to blazing-fast 5.4Gbps† of WiFi 6 on up to 75 devices simultaneously across more space: 5 rooms or up to 350 m2" while the system can't even proper cover my tiny 2x70sqm house build of timber and plaster-walls.
While, now I just learn I bought a "entry level" system at an outrageous price point (which btw, is still sold as RBK762S at 500 to 600 dollars in Europe... not matter if Netgear shop, Amazon or some electronics webshop. The RBS760s satellites also are 250 dollars each.) And really simple use cases like routing TCP/IP packets from the Wifi to the ethernet port shouldn't require processing power, lots of RAM or sophisticated software. Since the RBK760 series ist just bad. Really bad. Sorry to say... I feel cheated and lied to. And yes, I am salty.
So why would I trust the 750 or 850? Or even 950 doing it better? The software certainly "looks" the same.
Assuming i would go for a "higher end" series. Which would you recommend and why?

I do have all three orbi systems. The hardware differs from the 350 series. Also we got to beta test v.21 version of FW so helped in getting better issues seen to NG for fixing before they released it. v.21 is solid and stable on those 3 models. Something NG should have let us help with v.31 but that didn't happen.
Can the 50 series still work for you or you itching to upgrade to new tech?

Would you recommend 850 or 750? How about the 770?
FURRYe38 wrote:Can the 50 series still work for you or you itching to upgrade to new tech?
Unfortunately, the RBR50 stop working at some point. It kept rebooting every few hours and did not keep the configuration anymore. I tried a lot of different tricks from this forums. Nothing worked. So, I thought... just upgrade to a decent new set. And based on the price, I assumed the 760 series would be a reasonable replacement. Boy, was I wrong.
Maybe I'll try NFS. That should work as a workaround for a while.

Both 750 and 850 are solid systems.
BE systems are fairly new and still maturing.
Did you happen to load voxels FW on the 50 series?

Okay, thanks. will think about it.

No, too bad. By now the 50s are gone.
But I made an interesting discovery today. Sitting right next to (about 3 feet away) the satellite with the NAS attached, I got o 89-95mb/s. Which is very nice. Moving away 3 feet, it dropped to 30mb/s... next room at another 3 feet and a dry/wall inbetween... 10mb/s. So, we are again down to: The backhaul and the wifi coverage is pretty bad. I can't really understand why. It is a really small house. But as soon as I am more then 6 feet away from a satellite or - god beware - a wall is between the satellite and the computer the wifi gets really week.
I just did set up a brand new Macbook for my wife. Same behavior. So I am pretty sure, it is not my computer.
also I shuffled around all the satellites just to see if maybe one of them is "bad".
I think, it is just the antennas or chip which do not put out a decent signal. Quite disappointing.

Ya, Seems like the 760P series isn't the greatest. Can contact NG support and see if there maybe any recourse. Other then that, I'd probably get into something different.

I have a 4200sqft house and have been using a RBK853 system (router plus 2 satellites) for the last couple of years without any connectivity or signal strength issues. YMMV but its been ok for me. I have the router upstairs on 2nd floor and the two satellites on the first floor. They control 7 TVs (rarely more than 2 TVs on at a time) and many home automation devices. We have 1Gbps service from Xfinity. I have several IoT devices on a separate SSID.

Just curious, whats the system uptime show on your 850 series?

Up time has been good with the only downtime being the fault of Xfinity. The Orbi 850 devices we have here have been outstanding. By the way I use the RBR850 in AP mode. I have a different router (pfSense).

Is there a time value seen for the RBR and RBS?
- DarkNetDec 18, 2024Apprentice
I dont know where to look for that.
- FURRYe38Dec 18, 2024Guru - Experienced User
Two places, RBRs web page under Advanced Tab/Internet section/Show stats and router IP address/debug.htm

I powered down the system a month or so ago for some re-cabling.

So, how does the 770 compare?
is that also a cheap'o version? It certainly isn't cheap to buy here...
I am very close to go for a 850.
